1. Gandhi Final Question
Mahatma Gandhi was a leader in India that was always opposed to violence. He went to college in London, England, to become a lawyer. He then travelled to South Africa where he saw first hand how poorly Indian immigrants were treated there. He tried to get Indians to peacefully protest for equal rights in South Africa. He was beaten by South African police many times, and put into prison. But eventually, Gandhi and the Indians got the peace they deserved. Gandhi then decided to return to India.
Gandhi was a member of the Congress of India, although he often differed from the other members of the party. Gandhi saw from experience, and the others did not. Gandhi decided to travel through India to see what life is like for people across the nation. Gandhi and many other leaders wanted independence from Britain. The Indians did a march for salt to show that they should use the resources that they have around them, and not give them away from Britain. The British react to Gandhi's actions by arresting everyone they can except for Gandhi, so they could take the power from under Gandhi.
Eventually, India gains independence from Britain. A huge issue that occurs when India gains independence is Pakistan and India begin to fight. Gandhi does not approve of these violent acts against each other, so he begins to "fast until death". Many Hindus and Muslims continued to fight until Gandhi became very ill, they then began to stop fighting, so that Gandhi would eat again, and not die. Later, Gandhi was assassinated by extreme Hindus who thought he was too nice to the Muslims. Although Gandhi's life ended tragically, he has had a huge impact not just on India, but on the whole world.
"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it. Always." -- Mahatma Gandhi
